The G.B. Hyde Cup   played at Bootle YMCA  Tuesday  6 / 3 / 07 match official  Roly Wright

Harold House ‘A’  5  ( Eddie Clein, Martin Roberts, John Hughes & Rod McPherson)   v  Bath Street ‘D’  2  (Mark Paterson, Neil Pritchett, Les Gee & Peter Ross).

A couple of changes since the recent league meeting, Bath St’s No. 2 Neil was missing from that game, and Rod and Martin had changed 2 & 4 spots. H.H. won that match 7-3.

Bath St. chose the away spot, calling on the doubles because H.H.’s  No. 2 hadn’t arrived,  Bath St’s Mark & Peter won the first game 11 – 4 against H.H.’s  John & Rod, second game to H.H. 13 – 11, but Bath St. ran away with the next two, 5 & 6. H.H. then called John to play Neil, John winning in 4, Mark then called himself on against Martin, Mark just couldn’t get into his rhythm, Martin kept getting them back, then stepping in to surprise Mark with a smash, Martin winning, 7, 11, & 8. H.H. next called Rod v Peter, Rod won this in 4, hitting through Peter’s pushing, to win 9, 6, -9, 9.  Bath St’s next call kept Rod at the table v Les, Les’s style and determination soon overcame Rod’s hitting, and soon won in 3 straight, 4, 3, & 9. So 3 – 2 for H.H. looked like a long night, H.H. then called Eddie on to play Neil, wow! Neil was on fire, everything was going on, whizzing past Eddie, no chance for Eddie to get his dig going,  more a retrieving game, (off the floor), Neil running away with the first two 5 & 7, did someone tell Neil how to consolidate the match, he changed something, because Eddie started getting his dig and push going, making Neil miss his hits, with the inevitable frustration setting in, but Eddie was up for it now, winning the next two 8 & 6, and the 5th, changing ends with the lead, and kept it to win 11 – 7. Bath St. called on Les v Martin, Les had had such a dominant game against Rod that the hope was to repeat it now, but as Mark had found, Martin was having a good night, and coped with Les’s changing game of pace and bat, in return, making Les chase a bit after his more directed shots, and took only 3 games, 6, 9, & 7, to finish the set and victory to H.H.’A’ 5 sets to 3.

A nice little surprise from Harold House 'A' team for their "elder statesman" Eddie, a bottle of Champagne and a birthday cake with 1 candle on, to celebrate Eddies coming of age 70th birthday
