Harold House ‘A’ 5 Bootle YMCA ‘A’ 1
Report by Russell Thornton, Marconi The two teams were Harold House 'A' Eddie Clein, Martin Roberts, John Hughes & Rod McPherson (capt.) and Bootle YMCA 'A''s John Higham, Roly Wright (capt.) Danny Every & Shakil Malik.
Bootle YM received a bit of a fillip with the last minute announcement that H.H.’s expected No.1 Sylwia Rozek was unable to play, with Eddie Clien stepping in as replacement at No. 1, Eddie had not long returned from a long haul flight and must have been a little 'shell shocked' to get the call! Editor
Bootle YM won the toss and elected to be the
away team, the 1st call was John Hughes to play Roly Wright. In an open
forehanded attacking match John came back from 2-1 down to edge it 9/11
12/10 3/11 11/2 12/10.
The 2nd match on was Rod McPherson against
Danny Every. Danny looked as though he was going to level the match by
going into a 2-0 lead due to his attacking backhand but Rod came back from
2-0 down with his spinny attacking game to win 7/11 8/11 11/5 11/8 11/4.
The 3rd call was Martin Roberts against John
Higham and yet again it was the Bootle YM player who took the early spoils
but Martin also came back from 2-0 down to win 7/11 5/11 11/9 11/6 11/7.
Harold House’s next call was to put Eddie Clein
on against Roly Wright, and this time Roly’s attacking topspin was too
much for Eddie’s chopping game and came out on top 13/11 11/1 11/8.
Next Bootle YM called Rod McPherson on against
Shakil Malik, Rod went into a 2-0 lead only to be pegged back to 2-2 but
won the 5th game 11/1.
The last match was Martin Roberts against Danny
Every, Martin played with confidence and took the match 11/7 11/5 11/8.
The match was played at Christ The King with thanks to Arthur Knowlson and Dave Tagg. The Match Official was Ray Lavin and the refreshments were provided by Roly Wright.
