Bootle YMCA ‘C’ v Arriva North West
Teams were Steve Daniels, Arthur Garnett, Jim Geddes & Joe Rees for BYM and Derek Scotland, Harry Hughes, Graham Rollinson & Pavel Tomczyk for Arriva.
Arriva won the toss, went for the away team spot and called on Derek to play Arthur, when Derek’s on song he’s hard to stop, and didn’t allow Arthur to warm up, winning 8 / 6 / 2. Jim called on Joe to play Pavel, Joe just out-pushed Pavel to win 3-0, for what turned out to be BYM’s last feel of the cup. Harry next called himself on against Jim, Harry won this one in 3. Jim next put Steve on against Derek, after the 1st game, Steve looked as if this was going to be the turning point, winning 13-11, but Derek had seen enough, and with the coaching staff giving advice in the break, went on to win the next 3 games 5 / 5 / 4. 3-1 up and Arriva call on Graham to play Arthur, 1st game went to Graham 11-6, Arthur didn’t look as if he’d recovered from his earlier set, but set to, to retrieve the situation, putting up a tremendous fight to take the 2nd game 17-15, but that was it next 2 games to Graham 8 & 8. So 4-1 down and Jim gives the holding task to Steve to play captain Harry, Steve battled away, losing the 1st 10-12, the 2nd 4-11, and the 3rd 11-13, so match over, 5-1 to Arriva North West, the Stamp Cup, and in with a good chance of the double
